What are you waiting for? Start exploring!
1. Kit Kat — Sweetness for Adults (Strawberry)
Strawberry Kit Kat for grown-ups, which in Japan means the sweetness gets dialed down. The classic biscuit and little bits of real strawberry get kneaded right into the chocolate. It comes through with an interesting texture and a little tartness instead of tasting like a pink highlighter, but it’s still candy, because adults aren’t made of stone.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
2. Kit Kat — Milo
Milo is the chocolate malt drink an Australian food scientist named Thomas Mayne came up with in 1934, and here it’s mixed right into the Kit Kat chocolate. Yeah, we looked that up for you. Japan sells this one as an iron-boost snack, and the bag suggests keeping it to two pieces a day. Their words, not ours. Anemia gang stand up (?) .
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
3. Kit Kat — Sweetness for Adults (Rich Matcha)
When Nestlé Japan launched this in 2017, they called it the world’s most intense matcha Kit Kat, with twice the Uji matcha of their regular matcha version. This guy hits super bitter up front and finishes sweet. All you tea freaks out there, this one’s yours.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
4. Kit Kat — Orange Chocolate
Juicy orange up front, rich milk chocolate right behind it. It is the opinion of this Sugoi Mart copywriter that orange and chocolate is criminally, shockingly underrated. If you agree, hello, here's your Kit Kat , dear friend.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk and Soy
5. Kit Kat — Original
The red bag. You know it, you love it. Japan rebuilt its standard Kit Kat for its 50th anniversary in 2023, with more cacao and a louder crunch (seriously), so even the “plain” one isn’t the one you grew up with. And since the name sounds like kitto katsu (きっと勝つ), “you’ll surely win,” all eleven pieces technically count as good luck charms.
Something Notable about the kitto katsu aspect of these chocolates is that they are often given before high-stress events like exams and even job interviews. You might notice the white grid space on many of the packages; that's where friends and loved ones write personalized messages of support and good luck. Try it out. Or be selfish and don't. It's your candy.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
6. Kit Kat — Sakura
Pink cherry blossom chocolate with little crunchy flecks of pink feuilletine, floral and lightly sweet, with that cherry-leaf note sakura sweets always have. As mentioned on day 5, each wrapper has space to write someone a note. In Japan, sakura saku (桜咲く), “the cherry blossoms bloomed," is how you tell someone they passed their exam. Which, yeah, is cute.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
7. Kit Kat — High Cacao
Kit Kat wrapped in 72% cacao chocolate, bittersweet in the literal way. Hopefully not the figurative way. The wafer actually keeps it from getting too intense.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
8. Kit Kat — Ito En Matcha Chocolate
Ito En makes Oi Ocha, the iconic bottled green tea in every convenience store fridge in Japan, and their tea masters signed off on this one. Their actual job title is "Teas Master," by the way. Lowkey goals. Deep, sharp matcha met rich cocoa chocolate and now they're best friends. Built to go with a cup of green tea. It's kind of like a sister snack to day 3 but goth.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
9. Kit Kat — Strawberry Chocolate
Bright strawberry and rich chocolate on the same bar, with dried strawberry bits mixed in. Texture fans will go nuts for this. Fun fact: Japan’s first-ever flavored Kit Kat was strawberry, test-launched in Hokkaido in 2000. Obviously their flavor lineup has, uh, expanded a little since then.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
10. Kit Kat — Sweetness for Adults (Dark Chocolate)
Another adult flavor: Japan’s grown-up Kit Kat is milk chocolate, just blended less sweet, with crushed bittersweet cocoa biscuit teamed up for a deeper—dare I say bolder—flavor. Nestlé Japan even made October 7 “Kit Kat Adult Day,” because 10-7 can be read as o-to-na (大人), which means "adult." This country loves puns.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
11. Kit Kat — Golden Caramel
Salted caramel and rich Kit Kat chocolate together on the same piece, in a gold bag. Believe it. Taste it. Love it. Nestlé Japan makes it to cheer on kids in after-school clubs, whether that’s the soccer team or the brass band, with gold as in gold medals. Each wrapper also has room for a pep-talk note like we talked about a few days ago.
Common Allergens: Wheat, Milk, Soy
12. Kit Kat — Sweetness for Adults (Double Berry & Nuts)
Final round! Here's a grown-up Kit Kat with two kinds of berry: strawberry in the chocolate and raspberry in the cream between the wafers, plus a little almond paste for an entirely welcome nuttiness. This is about as close to trail mix as a Kit Kat can get and that's meant to be a compliment
Common Allergens: Tree Nuts (Almonds), Wheat, Milk, Soy
Congratulations! You've made it to day 12. We're so proud of you for making it. You resisted eating them all early!...right? If you ate them all in one sitting, we also congratulate you but... maybe take a little sugar break for the rest of the week, yeah? Happy holidays and merry new year and Feliz Kit Kat Calendar!
